    In New York Xavier Gonzalez aligned himself with the European Surrealists that fled Paris during World War II. This painting exemplifies his surrealist style. His paintings in the 40's reflect the integration of his Regionalist style. Two watercolors in this sale are depicted in this painting.
    In 1946 Xavier Gonzalez was honored with a first prize in the prestigious Pepsi Cola Paintings of the Year national juried competition for his Surrealist work titled Sources of Sorrows. This painting was the cover image that month in the leading art magazine of the day, Art in America. during the time Gonzalez was considered one of the top artists in America.
