    J. Wilmerding, Robert Salmon, Painter of Ship and Shore, Salem, Peabody Museum, 1971, Appendix A, p. 95, no. 825.

Robert Salmon was an important early marine painter active in America before Fitz Hugh Lane. His seascapes depend upon European compositional formulas, but possess a refreshing intimacy and immediacy. He eventually returned to his native Scotland.

This work is listed as no. 825 in the handwritten catalogue Robert Salmon made of his own works. While the the artist's original manuscript is lost, a transcript of it, handwritten in ink, is preserved in the Boston Public Library. John Wilmerding published a verbatim reproduction of this manuscript as Appendix A of his monographic catalogue on Robert Salmon. Interestingly, the artist was careful to note the number of hours or days it took to finish each of his paintings. This work he titled Ferryboat required two days to complete.

Condition Report*: Under UV examination there are only modest inpaint restorations visible: along the upper edge of the painting where it meets the frame, along right side of the painting where it meets the frame, two pinpoint restorations in the sky and one on the rock beneath the group of three boys. Paint surface intact.
