    13-3/8 x 6-3/4 inches (34.0 x 17.1 cm)
    Monogrammed and dated lower left: 18 V 86

    Possibly Mrs. L. G. Collins, New York, January 24, 1886, purchased for $150;
    Purchased from Grand Central Art Galleries, New York, December 18, 1979 (label verso).

    R. Storia, Elihu Vedder: American Visionary Artist in Rome (1836-1923), Rutherford, Madison and Teaneck, 1970, cat. no. 422, p. 331: This painting is probably identical with the work entitled "The Sorceress-Small" c. 1886 , listed in Regina Storia's book on the artist, and as such is one of three recorded versions of this subject by Vedder. The largest and first version was painted in 1872 ( cat. no. 235, p. 307) while the smallest version was painted c. 1876 on board measuring 7 5/8 x 3/38 in. (cat. no. 292, p. 313).

    Condition Report*: Original stretcher bars and unlined canvas with artist's signature and inscription on verso. Visible under UV examination is a quarter-sized area of retouch in the center of the large brown urn on the right, which appears to repair a spot of abrasion, and three small touches of strengthening immediately to the right of the woman's gown on the chair.  Otherwise, the painting is completely untouched.
