Christie's, New York, Dec 1st, 1989, sale no. 6972, lot 22 (stickers verso).

By the year he painted this view from the top of the mountain above Kaaterskill Falls, Sanford Gifford had established himself as a full academician at the National Academy of Design. His devotion to his metier of landscape painting, which included extensive travels in search of scenery in both Europe and the United States, earned him recognition as one of the finest painters of the early Hudson River School. Gifford's method of creating a work of art was similar to other Hudson River School artists. He would first sketch rough, small works in oil paint from his sketchbook pencil drawings. Those scenes he most favored he then developed into small, finished paintings such as this, then into larger, finished paintings. His landscapes commonly possess a hazy atmosphere with soft, suffuse sunlight. He is consequently regarded as a practitioner of Luminism, an offshoot style of the Hudson River School. Gifford was born in Hudson, New York, not far from the site he recorded in this painting in the eastern Catskills.
