    ROBERT WILLIAM WOOD (American, 1889-1979)
    Texas Bluebonnets, San Antonio, 1930
    Oil on canvas
    32 x 48-1/4 inches (81.3 x 122.6 cm)
    Signed lower right: Robt. Wood

Robert William Wood is an icon in American landscape painting, which historically has been called "The American School". As with any artist, there is a period time and subject that collectors, museums, scholars and admirers begin to consider an artist's most important - for Wood the late-1920s and early-1930s, while living just outside of San Antonio in Texas Hill Country has over time become his.

    Texas Bluebonnets, San Antonio, 1930
was created during this period. It shows the influence of two of the best early Texas artists-his teacher, Jose Arpa, and the legendary Julian Onderdonk, the Texas landscape Impressionist by which all others are measured, especially when it comes to bluebonnet paintings. Wood's Texas Bluebonnets does not seek to copy Onderdonk's iconic approach to the subject but it does capture the light, atmosphere, and grandeur of the Texas Hill Country in a way that few other artists have matched. From the open sky bursting with clouds and the hazy horizon to the painterly middle-ground and the vibrant blue of the foreground, it is a masterpiece of the kind that rarely becomes available on the open market.
