    PROPERTY OF A PROMINENT TEXAS COLLECTOR

    HAROLD VON SCHMIDT (American, 1893-1982)

    Signed and dated lower right: Harold / von / Schmidt / 1928
    Inscribed verso: As it was, he got the impression of all manner of eyes and features turned on him from out of a deep fur collar.

    Harold Von Schmidt was one of the most popular painters in America during the latter days of the great age of magazine illustration. His paintings and drawings were vivid accompaniments to many of the best writers of the day and appeared in the pages of Saturday Evening Post, Sunset, Cosmopolitan, and American. At a time when stories in these publications were the equivalent of today's television series, Von Schmidt's works provided the visual content for the words of many prominent writers.

    Von Schmidt was born in Alameda, California, and received his first art training at the California College of Arts and Crafts. Later he moved to New York City and was taught by Harvey Dunn at the Grand Central Art School. Dunn had been trained and greatly influenced by pioneer American illustrator, Howard Pyle, and he passed that tradition along to Von Schmidt. In turn, Von Schmidt became a teacher and mentor to many younger artists through the establishment of the Famous Artist's School in Westport, Connecticut. Von Schmidt was one of the founders of the school and remained on the faculty for many years. Affectionately known as Von by his students and colleagues, he became an influential mentor to many western artists.
