    NORMAN ROCKWELL (American 1894 - 1978)
Two Old Men and Dog: Hunting, Brown & Bigelow: Four Seasons Calendar, Autumn, 1950
    Oil on masonite
    24 x 22 in.
    Signed lower left

This work is reproduced as figure A123 on pages 308-309 of Norman Rockwell A Definitive Catalogue by Laurie Moffatt.

This delightful painting is in pristine condition, as fresh as the day Norman Rockwell finished it. This is the first public offering of the work since it was purchased by the consignor, a banker, forty-eight years ago in 1960. While at the time of publication the Moffatt catalog noted, "Whereabouts unknown," the consignor has provided first-rate documentation on the provenance of this wonderful painting.

A sales receipt from Brown & Bigelow dated February 28, 1960 notes that the painting was purchased for the sum of $500, "subject to approval." Later correspondence with Brown & Bigelow on October 25-28, 1969, done for insurance purposes, adds the following details, "Mr. Jim Nelson, Home Office Dist. Mgr. - Dear Jim, I sold the above man an original Rockwell painting in 1960 for $500. The subject was autumn, two fellows, one out hunting, one fellow is lighting the other man's pipe. He would like to know the approximate value of the painting today, primarily for insurance purposes. Is there anyone at the plant that could give me this information? Cordially, Bob Nadant, Home Office." The reply reads, "Dear Bob, I talked to Larry Goodman (Art Dept.). He recommends insurance for $2,000. This picture will increase in value every year. Incidentally we will no longer sell any original paintings so your customer really has a collector's item. Regards, Jim N."

Included in this lot are the original receipt and follow up correspondence to Brown & Bigelow regarding the painting.
