    According to Christine B. Podmaniczky, "The inscription on the reverse suggests that the artist reused this canvas and that the image below is either I.787 or I.788, both illustrations for the May 1919 installment of Ben Ames Williams's, "All the Brothers Were Valiant" in Everybody's Magazine" (N.C. Wyeth: Catalogue Raisonné of Paintings, vol. I, London, 2008, p. 415).

    Condition Report*: Lined canvas; under UV exam, there appear to be scattered spots of inpainting in the white negative space, most visible in natural light, as well as an approx. 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 inch spot in the treetop near the center left top edge, and an approx. 1-1/4 x 1-1/4 inch spot with associated flecks on Tobey's right bicep and tree foliage.
