"You killed my brother, now prepare to die." Known as the Robin Hood of El Dorado, Joaquin Murrieta Carrillo was a Sonoran Forty-niner who, according to legend, became an outlaw to avenge the destruction of his family during the California Gold Rush. Murrieta's legend inspired The Life and Adventures of Joaquin Murietta, the 1854 dime novel by John Rolland Ridge, Johnston Mc Culley's 1919 Zorro character, and likely William Goldman's Inigo Montoya of The Princess Bride. California master Maynard Dixon illustrates California legend Murrieta in the full fury of his 1851 rampage.
