We wish to thank Denise Bazetoux for kindly confirming the authenticity of this painting, which will be included in her supplement to the catalogue raisonné currently in preparation. The lot is accompanied by a copy of her photo-certificate, dated July 8, 2006.

Although Maximilien Luce favored urban subjects throughout the greater part of his career as a pointilliste, he began painting landscapes outside the city after roughly 1930 with a freer, more impressionistic brushwork. The present landscape characterizes Luce's later "rural" style which is considerably more atmospheric, achieved in part through a more animated paint application. In his later years the artist divided his time between Paris and the riverside village of Rolleboise northwest of Paris, glimpsed in this painting from a perch high on the opposite bank of the Seine.
