    JOSEPH CHRISTIAN LEYENDECKER (American, 1874-1951)
Lovebirds, The House of Kuppenheimer Style Book advertising diptych, Fall/Winter 1918-1919
    Oil on canvas
    28 x 21 in. (each)

    EXHIBITED:
Commercial Art Exhibition, Art Institute of Chicago, September 23 - October 24, 1920.

Leyendecker's advertising artwork for Kuppenheimer represents the master's most iconic imagery as well as some of his most richly painted and detailed compositions. His diptychs for the company stand at the very peak of his oeuvre, and this stellar, boldly designed image of a young couple immediately resonates with charm and sweetness. Leyendecker is justifiably renowned for his definitive images of men's fashion that embody a cultural moment--in full evidence here. But through the clever compositional device of a string of yarn spanning the canvases, the artist also links the dashing young soldier to one of the most fully fleshed out and individualized women he ever painted, gorgeous and full of personality.

The stunning painting has an impeccable provenance and is the definition of fresh to market, remaining in the collection of a single family since the 1920s and never before offered by a gallery or at auction. It is one of the most important illustration masterpieces Heritage has had the pleasure to offer.
