    JOSÉ ARPA (1858-1952)
The Balanced Rock - Grand Canyon, 1926
    Oil on canvas
    14in. x 17in.
    Signed lower right
    Signed, dated, and titled verso

The Balanced Rock - Grand Canyon is one of José Arpa's most famous paintings. Three versions are known to exist (one watercolor and two oils). The first is a watercolor currently owned by A. C. Cook of Fort Worth, Texas. The watercolor was probably done plein-air at the rim of the Grand Canyon. This watercolor was nationally exhibited in 1926.

The second is a large-scale oil currently in the collection of the Spanish National Museum, which was also exhibited in the United States in 1926. It is also on the front cover of a book published about Arpa in spain.

The third is this painting, which has been in a collection in Mexico for many years. The painting is owned by a descendant of the owner of the Desert Picture Shop in El Paso, Texas (one of Arpa's dealers in the 1920s and 1930s). This painting was exhibited at the Oakland Art Gallery Fourth Annual Exhibition of Paintings in 1926. The price of the painting was $400, which was a huge sum of money in the 1920s.

This oil is in wonderful original condition, never having been relined, restored, or cleaned, for that matter. The paint is well-adhered without flaking or crazing. The original frame is intact and in good condition.

This is a wonderful opportunity to purchase one of José Arpa's principal works.

Acquired by descent from the artist by the present owner
