This work, being the third in a series of four, depicts the subject of the poet Anancreon and Cupid. The first and second, Cupid at the Door in a Rainstorm and Young Love's shivering limbs the embers warm, portray a sopping Cupid seeking shelter with Anancreon. Upon gaining admittance he smugly warms himself by the fire. In the present composition Cupid shoots Anancreon as he flees, leaving another victim in his wake. The fourth, The Poet dreams of Cupid by the Fire, depicts Cupid holding a portrait of Anacreon's love and taunting him as he rests beside the fire.

It would indeed have been much simpler to work with a local auction house, and we had local options. But we never once regretted going with Heritage.
