    JASPER FRANCIS CROPSEY (American, 1823-1900)
Wyoming Valley (Probably, Landscape with Sheep)
    Oil on canvas
    12 x 20 inches (30.5 x 50.8 cm)

"This painting is undoubtedly the preliminary study for Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania, 1897, oil on canvas, 16 1/4 x 30 inches, unlocated, no. 1465, which was exhibited at the National Academy in 1897, as no. 167. Since the canvas is not signed or dated, it was likely in the artist's studio at the time of his death and was sold at the Silo Art Galleries, New York, estate sale of Cropsey's widow, as no. 80, Landscape and Sheep. For other paintings of Wyoming Valley by Jasper F. Cropsey, see Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania, 1864, oil on canvas, 15 x 24 inches, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, no. 1001" (Newington-Cropsey Foundation Object Research File).

This painting is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the Newington-Cropsey Foundation and will be included in the catalogue raisonné of Cropsey's works, to be published by the Newington-Cropsey Foundation.
