James Brooks moved to Dallas in 1916 and studied at Southern Methodist University. Later he attended the Dallas Art Institute under Olin Travis. In 1926 Brooks moved to New York and in the 1930's worked for the Works Progress Administration.

After World War II, Brooks aligned himself with the New York School. In 1950 twenty eight of the most prominent artists in the United States wrote an open letter to the Metropolitan Museum of Art accusing the museum of "loading its juries with critics hostile to advanced art". A photographer brought 14 of the signatories together for a famous photograph that came to be known as "The Irascibles." This group included James Brooks, Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Clyfford Still, Robert Motherwell, William de Kooning and Ad Reinhardt.

James Brooks remained a pioneer of the Abstract Expressionism movement. This painting was created the year after Brooks received a Guggenheim Fellowship.

    Provenance: James Brooks
Estate of Perry Nichols (gift from the artist)
