    Seascape , 1878
    Oil on canvas
    25 x 38 inches (63.5 x 96.5 cm)
Signed and dated lower left: I. Aivasovsky / 1878
Signed lower right in red: Aivazovsky in Cyrillic

    Armenian-American Family Collection.

This painting, never before offered at auction, was given as a wedding present to the present owner by her mother at Berlin in January 1946. The painting had been acquired in Paris in the 1930s.

Aivazovsky's depictions of the sea and people in distress are legendary. His experience on the high seas with the Russian navy gave him a lifetime of memories, which he drew upon to complete paintings such as the present lot. The figures stranded high on the rocky coast look out to sea through the mist and faint moonlight. Aivazovsky was a master at capturing a moment in time when the sea was raging and captivating its audience, in this instance perhaps at the treacherous Bosphorus Strait.
