    Description

    HOWARD CHANDLER CHRISTY (American, 1872-1952)
    Nymphs in Summer, 1946
    Oil on canvas
    60.5 x 72 in.
    Signed lower left

Commissioned from the artist by Commander Oliver Colvin, New York.

This monumental, lushly painted masterpiece by Christy is the most impressive canvas by the famed artist that we have ever offered-- and it compares favorably to any ever offered at public auction. The supremely talented Christy arrived in New York in 1890 to attend the Art Students League where he studied with William Merritt Chase. Later in his career, after a successful stint in book and magazine illustration, Christy specialized in portraiture. Nudes were an important subject throughout his working life, and represent some of the most accomplished and detailed images the artist ever painted-- it is immediately evident that Christy took a good deal of pleasure in these sensuous paintings, and as such, they stand as his most popular with collectors, counting for the majority of his top prices at auction.
