Amelia Earhart, Town and Country cover, February 1, 1933
    Oil on canvas
    60 x 40 in.

The supremely talented Howard Chandler Christy arrived in New York in 1890, to attend the Art Students League where he studied with William Merritt Chase. Later in his career, after a successful stint in book and magazine illustration, Christy specialized in painting Presidents, society's grand dames, Hollywood stars, and Army Generals. The roaring twenties brought a demand for portrait artists -- many notables sought their immortality on canvas. It was at this point, that Christy turned away from illustration and moved into the field of portraiture. Among his most celebrated subjects were Presidents Franklin Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover, and past Presidents James Garfield, Martin Van Buren, and James Polk. Christy also painted such news-making celebrities as Will Rogers, Eddie Rickenbacker, and Amelia Earhart.

A poem by Ben Riddie attached verso:
"From Howard Chandler Christy to Amelia Earhart
I have painted you/ Against the reaches of the sky./ We sail together, you and I./ Great dreams come true./ Beyond the head winds of fate,/ Beyond my creative art/ We, who dare the start/ Know the happy ending, tho we wait/ So I have painted you/ In your rich brief moment to find/ A loving niche of all of human kind/ So I have painted you."

From the Estate of Charles Martignette.
