Guillaume Seignac forged a successful career as a painter of beautiful women, ravishing nymphs, and cavorting putti that was powerfully influenced by the example of William Bouguereau, the preeminent French Academic painter of the last quarter of the nineteenth century. A product of the Académie Julian in Paris, Seignac trained directly with Bouguereau, as well as his like-minded colleagues Tony Robert-Fleury and Gabriel Ferrier, who emphasized impeccable draftsmanship and focused on idealized beauty both in their own work and their teaching. The influence of these instructors, especially that of Bouguereau, inspired Seignac's choice of subject matter for many of his works: the world of classical antiquity. In the present picture we see a nymph, dressed in robes that cling to her graceful form, listening to Cupid who whispers secrets of Love: this is a fantasy of a bygone age and one in which Seignac excelled in bringing to life. The pose of the nymph and the hovering contrapposto of the whispering Cupid both find close correlations with some of Bouguereau's own compositions from the period 1889-1892. Seignac became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1901 and exhibited at its Salon regularly, winning the Third Class medal in 1903, the year in which he exhibited Le secret d'Amour.
