GERALD WILLIAMSON "JERRY" BYWATERS (American, 1906-1989)
    Light Snow, 1942

    24 x 30 inches (61.0 x 76.2 cm)
Signed and dated lower right: JERRY BYWATERS '42
Titled, signed, inscribed, and numbered verso: "LIGHT SNOW" / BY JERRY BYWATERS / DALLAS, TX. / 149

Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, "Thirteenth Annual Allied Arts Exhibition", March 29-April 28, 1942 (vestige of label verso).

During the early 1940s, several members of the Lone Star Regionalists-based largely in Dallas-painted the landscape of north or west Texas, often
showing fields under cultivation or some other type of agricultural activity. Many of these works, by artists like Jerry Bywaters, William Lester, Perry
Nichols, and Charles T. Bowling, have a melancholy mood. Moreover, many of these paintings depict snow or fall scenes. It is quite possible these were artistic responses to the United States entering World War II. Large Bywaters paintings from this period, like Light Snow, 1942, are extremely rare, and almost never become available on the open market. This is a very special opportunity for collectors of Texas Regionalism, which may not come again for several years.

Born in Paris, Texas, Bywaters moved to Dallas in 1917. He studied at Southern Methodist University, the Dallas Art Institute, and the Art Students League. Bywaters also painted at the American Impressionist colony at Old Lyme, Connecticut, and in France and Spain. He helped found the Dallas Artists League and the Lone Star Printmakers and exhibited in most of the major Texas art exhibitions held before World War II. Not long after Bywaters exhibited Light Snow in the 1942 Dallas Allied Arts exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts in Fair Park, he became director of the DMFA, a post he held until 1964.
