Along with Reynolds and Gainsborough, George Romney is considered one of the top society portraitists of 18th-century England. This portrait of the eldest daughter of the 3rd Earl of Buckinghamshire reflects Romney's great refinement and sensitivity of feeling when depicting his sitters. Characterized by subtlety of color, this graceful composition captures the understated elegance of the young lady.

This painting was probably commissioned by the sitter's father on the occasion of her marriage to Richard Cumberland on June 25, 1784. In his diary, Romney recorded the sittings of Miss Hobart directly before and after her wedding: June 19, 22, 26, and 29 of 1784. The artist probably referred to her as Miss Hobart because the portrait was commissioned by her father, who did not assume the title of 3rd Earl until the passing of his brother, the 2nd Earl, in 1793.

This portrait was engraved in mezzotint by M. Cormack and originally published on June 21, 1890, by Paul and Dominic Colnaghi & Co.; the print is now in the National Portrait Gallery, London (NPG D15666).
