    Description

    FREMONT ELLIS (American 1897-1985)
    Autumn Aspens, 1951
    Oil on canvas
    24in. x 30in.
    Signed and dated lower left

Born in Montana, Fremont Ellis was a renowned Western landscape painter. After settling in Santa Fe, he founded the modernist artist group "Los Cinco Pintores" (Five Painters) with Jozef Bakos, Walter Mruk, Willard Nash, and Will Shuster. Ellis' paintings are characterized by a luminous sensibility that reflects the natural environment of the American West. With its golden tonality and impressionistic brushwork, this painting is a fine example of Fremont Ellis' ability to create light-infused landscape scenes. The work is framed in an original Fremont Ellis frame.

Provenance: Acquired from the artist by Mr. and Mrs. S.D. Rasura, El Paso, TX, 1968
    David Dike, Dallas, TX
acquired from the above by the present owner
