    Walsh Family Art Trust

Ferdinand Roybet, the excellent portraitist and genre painter, was born in Uzes, France, on the 20th of April 1840. He started his art training very early in life at the École des Beaux Arts at Lyon. He showed great ability and much promise, and in 1864 he left Lyon for Paris where he became the favorite student of the famous Vibert. So rapid was his development and so able was his artistic genius that he made his debut the following year with a magnificent exhibition at the Salon des Champs Elysees.

In 1866 his painting of The Jester of Henry III won him a medal at the Paris Salon. It was the acquisition of this latter painting by the Princess Mathilde which definitely secured the reputation of Roybet, and also definitely decided the style of his future work. Roybet, in a short time, became quite famous and successful. He enjoyed a great patronage and many honors were bestowed upon him - one being that of a Professorship at Lyon.

Roybet won the Medal of Honor at the Universal Exhibitions at Berlin and Venice in 1894. In 1893 his painting The Galante Proposal was purchased by Mr. Mac-Leod for 100,000 Francs (approximately $25,000). Roybet enjoyed success until his death which occurred in April, 1920.
