    Oil on canvas
    25 x 28 1/4in.
    Signed lower right: Spruce

This important historic painting was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in 1942. A book titled Americans 1942 - 18 Artists from 9 States accompanied the exhibition and is included with the lot. Americans 1942 was the first of a series of exhibitions in which the Museum of Modern Art surveyed leading American artists of the 1940's. Excerpt from the book: "Americans 1942 underscores the remarkable development of important art centers throughout the country in the past decade... younger artists predominate and their recent work has been favored." This exhibition was one of the first recognitions by the New York art establishment that Texas artists were at the cutting edge of modern American art. Texas artist, Octavio Medellin was recognized in this exhibition.
