    EMIL CARLSEN (American 1853 - 1932)
    Canvas mounted on board
    20 x 25in.
    Signed lower right

    Vincent Price;
    Ferargil Galleries, New York;
    Estate of R.F. Voyer, Bonham, Texas

    This refined, quintessentially abstract evocation of the entrance to the harbor of Venice exemplifies Carlsen's sensitivity to light in his rendering of reflections in water. The painting divides itself into areas of water and sky, punctuated by a yellow-sailed skiff as the central focal point. The artist's masterful use of short brushstrokes to simulate the sparkling shades of yellow, blue, and green in the foreground serves as a foil to the atmosphere rendered in broad sweeps of brushmarks that capture the lavender tones of the late afternoon sky.
