    Description

    EDGAR ALWIN PAYNE (American, 1883-1947)
    Canyon de Chelly
    Oil on artists' board
    10 x 12 inches (25.4 x 30.5 cm)
    Signed lower right: Edgar Payne
    Titled and signed verso: Canyon de Chelly / Arizona / Edgar A. Payne

    PROVENANCE:
    Harvey Daniel Hatfield, Hollywood, California;
    Elizabeth Joy Hatfield Evans, his daughter;
    Thence by descent.

    NOTE:
    Mr. Harvey Hatfield was a painter who belonged to the Los Angeles Businessmen's Art Association and owned a radio repair shop in Hollywood in the 1940s. It is thought that Canyon de Chelly and Navajos were acquired directly from Payne through a radio repair barter and that the two were associated through the art community.
