    Description

    CONSTANTIN ALEKSANDROVICH WESTCHILOFF (1877-1945)
    Rocky Seascape
    Oil on canvas
    20 x 40 inches (50.8 x 101.6 cm)
    Signed lower left: C. Westchiloff

Westchiloff studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg in the studio of the famous Wanderer artist Ilya Repin. Paintings of his were in the private collection of the Empress Maria Fedorovna. Westchiloff was awarded the Kuindzhi Prize which provided him the financial ability to travel. He traveled extensively throughout Italy, France, Egypt and Palestine, and in 1922 settled in Paris. Thirteen years later, with war looming on the horizon in Europe, Westchiloff immigrated to the United States and settled in New England.

Known primarily as a seascape painter, Westchiloff has captured the moment that thundering waves strike the rocky shore. White, frothy spray explodes into the air above waves cresting in the shallows. Westchiloff demonstrates his mastery as a painter of the sea, an ever changing subject, by his expert handling of the waves in the foreground and their impact upon the solidity of the rocks.
