    BIRGE HARRISON (American 1854-1929)
    The Red House
    Oil on canvas
    18in. x 30in.
    Signed lower right

Famous for his Tonalist and impressionistic renderings of landscapes and city scenes, Birge Harrison received his artistic training in Philadelphia before studying in France at the suggestion of John Singer Sargent. A member of the National Academy, Harrison was also one of the founders of the Woodstock Art Colony in New York. He achieved critical and popular success, particularly for his paintings of snowy winter scenes. The Red House is a superb example of Harrison's distinctly unpretentious compositions painted in variations of a single hue.
