    BILL BOMAR (1919-1990)
    Mountain Plumes, late 1930s - early 1940s
    Oil on linen
    44in. x 20in.
    Unsigned, but documented and exhibited

This painting is a principal early work of Bill Bomar. It bears the Weyhe Gallery sticker, which was the first New York gallery to recognize and show Fort Worth Circle painters.

The highly-colorful composition simplifies but dramatizes the fall mountain landscape. The tall aspens turn into spear-like forms, their white bark accentuated with vertical bands of white and black. The yellow leaves are turned into flame-like shapes. The sky comes alive with alternating areas of firey orange, red, and purple. The form of the pine trees in the foreground, and the mountains in the background, are simplified for a decorative effect.
