BERNARD BOUTET DE MONVEL (French, 1881-1949)
    Portrait of Brenda Frazier
    Oil and pencil on canvas
    14 x 13 inches (35.6 x 33.0 cm)
Signed upper right: BERNARD / B. DE MONVEL

This striking portrait by famed society portraitist Bernard Boutet de Monvel depicts Brenda Diana Duff Frazier (June 9, 1921 - May 3, 1982), an American debutante popular during the Depression era. She was dubbed by the media as one of the "Poor Little Rich Girls" along with socialites and other famous debutantes Barbara Hutton, Gloria Vanderbilt and Doris Duke. Brenda Frazier popularized the "white face" look, with her powdered skin as a startling contrast to her bright red painted lips and very dark, perfectly coiffed hair. Frazier's December 1938 coming-out party was so heavily publicized, appearing on the covers of newspapers worldwide, that she eventually appeared on the cover of Life magazine for that reason alone. In 1939 the word 'celebutante' was coined to describe Frazier's high-profile persona and fashionable notoriety.
