In 1942-44 Arthur Dove worked on a series of 3 x 4 inch paintings and referred to them as Sketches. These small works allowed Dove to distil his thoughts into intense compositions. They are highly treasured as a window into the artist's process. Many of these works embody the core of Dove's imagery, the abstraction of nature.

Dove kept the Sketches for his own personal use and did not consign them to Alfred Stieglitz to show. Some became studies for paintings. In the 1980's Dove's son donated groups of the Sketches to prominent museums across the country, to give public and scholarly access to the work and to help disseminate awareness of his father's achievement.

The museums include: The National Gallery, The Metropolitan Museum, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Amon Carter Museum, Wichita Art Center, Museum of Fine Art Boston, the Arkansas Art Center and the Wadsworth Athenaeum.
