    Private American collection.

Norwich Castle Museum, Norwich, England, "Alfred Munnings Exhibition", 1928, cat. no. 18 (label verso).

This marvelous study of three views of a rider in his hunting pinks was a preliminary work Alfred Munnings produced for a painting entitled Sir Thomas Robins Bolitho on Barum. Master of the Western Fox Hounds since 1864, which was also translated into a print presented by Cornish Sportsmen in 1921. In the final image Robins Bolitho sits astride a magnificent chestnut brown horse in the middle foreground, where he is surrounded by foxhounds, while in the distance his extensive lands at Trengwainton House, Cornwall are indicated through rocky hills and outcroppings. Born the son of a miller, Munnings rose to fame as one of the finest equestrian artists of his age. Following an apprenticeship as a lithographer from 1893 to 1898, Munnings studied at the Norwich School of Art and in Paris, where he was impressed with plein-air naturalism and was also introduced to the racecourse, which influenced the themes for which he became famous. He first went to Cornwall (where he produced the present work) in 1908, and for many years was an important addition to the Newlyn School of artists. When the First World War broke out, Munnings enlisted, despite having the use of only one eye owing to an accident in 1899. He became an army horse trainer near Reading and later went to France as an official war artist, attached to the Canadian Cavalry Brigade. The year 1919 was a major turning-point in all aspects of Munnings's life; he painted his first racehorse, Pothlyn, the winner of the Grand National, and became an Associate of the Royal Academy. Munnings's prolific career, spanning over 60 years, brought him many honors including election to the Presidency of the Royal Academy in 1944, a Knighthood in 1945, and a personal award from the Sovereign in 1947, when he was created Knight of the Royal Victorian Order.
