    Alberto Vargas (American, 1896-1982)
    Ziegfeld Starlet, 1927
    Watercolor on board
    36 x 26 inches (91.4 x 66.0 cm) (sight)
    Signed lower right

The model in this work is famed Broadway actress and producer Peggy Fears. A certificate of authenticity from the San Francisco Art Exchange accompanies this lot.

This delicately clothed painting is a fabulous example of the results Alberto Vargas was able to obtain using a unique method he developed. First, Vargas would paint the ravishing naked body, then he would add the clothing on top. With this technique he could control how much body was revealed through the fabric. Also, mentally the viewers' eyes perceive the subtle lines of the delicate body beneath the surface.

Peggy Fears began with the Ziegfeld Follies in 1924. She became Ziegfeld's leading star until she married AC Blumenthal, a wealthy tycoon.
