Leopold Carlovich Saefftigen, St. Petersburg, 1858-1864,
Marks: Signed and stamped '56' for 14k gold, crossed anchor and scepter hallmark for St. Petersburg
    6 x 3 inches (15.2 x 7.6 cm)

    Private Collection

This rare pendant cross was made by the St. Petersburg Court Jeweller, Leopold Saefftigen, during the reign of Tsar Alexander II (1855-81). Of rose gold and Latin design, the obverse is applied with a yellow gold crucifix in relief, the base and ends embellished with green garnets, surmounted by a stylized gold Romanov cross set with green garnets, the reverse engraved with a small Romanov imperial crown, attached to a gold oval link chain in a green leather box.

Imperial Gifts to the Russian Clergy

As a token of appreciation for their loyal service to the Church, the Russian imperial court would award gold and jewelled ecclesiastical gifts to the Russian Orthodox Clergy. These included diamond crosses for mitres, jewelled staffs, and gold crosses. According to court protocol, the Tsar would present gold crosses to priests. Until 1896, these large pendant crosses were gold, Latin in shape and usually unadorned except for a raised crucifix. They were worn on a long chain of flattened links doubled around the neck or on a ribbon that was tied just above the waist.
