Description
Manhattan Project GlassManhattan Project Hanford Site
Southeastern Washington, USA
A truly monumental relic of the Atomic Age, this extraordinary rough example of vibrant yellow Manhattan Project Glass weighs an astonishing 10.7 kilograms (23.5 pounds), placing it among the largest and most impressive examples of its type likely to be encountered. Originating from the legendary Hanford Site in Washington State, where the Plutonium used in the atomic bombs that brought World War II to an end was manufactured. As a specialized radiation-shielding window, the glass was installed in heavily protected laboratory and material processing environments, allowing scientists and technicians to observe highly radioactive materials while remaining shielded from harmful exposure. Its substantial composition, containing approximately 70% Lead Oxide, imparts exceptional density and weight, with the high lead content contributing to the specimen's striking optical characteristics and luminous coloration. Presented in its "natural" form, the piece displays an intensely saturated canary-yellow hue of uncommon richness and depth, with sharp conchoidal fractures. Light penetrating the glass reveals a glowing internal brilliance that contrasts dramatically with its sharp and industrial surfaces, creating a visual presence that is scientifically significant and aesthetically captivating. Combining an immense size, historical importance, and exceptional color, this colossal Hanford remnant stands as a museum-worthy survivor from one of the most consequential technological undertakings of the 20th Century, representing a tangible witness to the dawn of the Atomic Age.
