Visual Cacophony by Artist-Usama Khalid | DAYL Charity Ball proceeds benefit EPIC Dallas and Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity

    Visual Cacophony
    12x12, not framed
Done as a part of a series of 9 paintings done earlier last year, "Visual Cacophony" took a photograph that I had taken of a younger family member. With this image as a background, I placed two pieces of geometrically cut pieces of card stock in a symmetrical situation on the surface. I then went across the surface making slashes and cuts with an acrylic paint marker. The idea was that, as humans we are all tied together through various basic institutions; family, friendships, needs, desires and so on. Through the use of the photograph I indicated that family is the focus for many Pakistani families and people. It is sometimes all they have. But with the use of the cardstock and the painterly mark, I wanted to indicate that this image of a loving, caring society is pushed into the back. Instead the world sees a harsh and violent environment that only breeds hate and ignorance. As such, I wanted to nurture a discussion of the true nature of our societies and how if one looks closely they are many parallels between us and them.

I am a Pakistani-American artist who currently lives in Dallas, Texas. Currently a student at the University of Texas at Arlington, I have been studying for a bachelors in Fine arts with a concentration in painting. As a member of both Pakistani and American societies, I address the various issues and circumstances that I see from both parts of the world. By using mixed media and various surfaces and mediums, I want to provide as much light as possible on any situation that I decide to address in my work. //

The 2015 DAYL Charity Ball - Another EPIC Night will be held on the evening of Saturday, November 14, 2015 at the beautiful venue of 3015 at Trinity Groves. Proceeds from the DAYL (Dallas Association of Young Lawyers) Charity Ball will benefit EPIC and the Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity in their efforts to fight the significant blight issues in Dallas.

The philanthropic focus for this event is again to fight against blight in Dallas's urban neighborhoods by partnering with Economic Partners Investing in Communities (EPIC). EPIC has brought together the collective strengths and leadership of visionary philanthropist Toni Brinker, Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity, the Dallas Police Department, Mayor Rawlings's GrowSouth Initiative, and Safer Dallas, Better Dallas, to focus attention on the critical issue of revitalizing the Dallas community. EPIC was formed to bring together organizations that are already working throughout Dallas and help them combine resources to reduce the more than 100 square miles of blighted neighborhoods, which is 16% of the city.

Funds raised through the DAYL Charity Ball will fund EPIC's ongoing research into urban renewal, and support EPIC's crucial revitalization efforts. Online bidding will conclude Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 10 pm and will resume at the live event on Saturday, November 14, 2015. If you are highest bidder, you will be notified on Monday, November 16, 2015 by Heritage Auctions and the auction chair for the event.
