    Two Zuni Bolo Ties
    Virgil and Shirley Benn
    c. 1990


    silver, jet, abalone shell, spiny oyster shell, turquoise, malachite, each signed V & S Benn

    Provenance:
    Property from a Florida Private Collector

    Lengths of slides: 5 and 5 ½ inches

    Husband and wife team, Virgil (b. 1935) and Shirley (b. 1936) Benn collaborate to create Zuni-style inlay jewelry. Virgil is of Zuni and Paiute heritage, while Shirley is the great-granddaughter of the famous Hopi potter, Nampeyo. Their creations often depict Koshare clowns, as in this lot. The inspiration for this gluttonous character comes from the drawings of Shirley's older brother, Raymond Naha.
    Sacred clowns are jesters or tricksters in the kachina religion. They paint their bodies with black and white stripes and bind their hair so that it stands upright. The coiffure is then trimmed with corn husks, depicted by the Benns with a yellow-gold abalone shell.
