Description

Two Maya Polychrome Vases

Maya, Lowlands
C. 600-900 AD
Painted Ceramic
7" and 6½" Tall

The cup is painted in red, black, and cream with a band of glyphs at the rim, the main body with curls of various lengths, each decorated inside with unusual painting  in black, almost like snake skin. The cup has some erosion and stress lines. The tripod would have been a dramatic scene, now being very eroded. It stands on three openwork square feet with triangle cutouts, and painted in orange, black, and red. The discernable images show a large knot design with huge plumes surrounding, possibly a large snarling beak, jaguar spotting in areas, and a very unusual standing man with massive head. The vessel has a few stress lines and two reattached large shards.
