Description

Two Fine Bi-Chrome Bowls

Late Michoacan and Zacatecas
C. 1200 AD and 200 BC
Painted Ceramic
3" Tall x 6½" and 4½" by 8½"

The tripod stands on short pointed legs and unusually decorated on the exterior with negative resist large faded black stripes on the yellow polished ground and the interior with a highly grated surface in the base for use to grind ceremonial herbs. The upper interior is decorated with a scarce panel in black negative resist on a deep red base and highlighted with cream color and shows long necked birds with huge tail feathers, possibly a waterbird from another region; this bowl being late Michoacan and in excellent condition with only minor surface flaking. Second bowl is a sizable and vividly decorated offering vessel with a rounded base, thin highly polished surface inside and out, the exterior divided into quadrants and painted in bold red with undulating organic shapes, crosses, and circles with dots. Example has ancient drill holes on the sides of a break and has been stabilized. Rings quite nicely.
