Description

Rio Magdalena Covered Urn with Human

Rio Magdalena
C. 800-1500 AD
Buff Terra Cotta
31¾" Tall

The storage jar sits on a convex base for stability in a recessed hole on a dirt floor, the base decorated with a relief bird with claws clinging to a perch, the chest and head in high relief, the wings beside, and having several loops for securing the lid. The vessel's lid is a domed cover mounted with a large seated male on a stool. The figure alone measures 14½" tall by 9" wide and had originally been slipped, this now mostly eroded. He has tear drop eyes, flattened feet, genitalia exposed, and hands nicely detailed resting on the knees. Urns such as this would have been used for food and water storage or, potentially, an infant's burial urn. The urn has a few lines with perfectly matching repairs and in very nice condition while the lid dome is repaired, as is normal, from several large pieces and looks intact. A very decorative example. This lot requires third party shipping.
