    Description

Rare and Important Nazca Ceramic Female "Doll"

    C. 100-300 AD
    Height 9¾"

Nazca bowls and stirrup vessels elaborately painted with colorful, often abstract, images are among the most familiar styles of early Andean art. Accordingly, one might be quick to underestimate the scarcity of this full female figure. Although the head is very reminiscent of those which sometimes project three-dimensionally from Nazca vessels, the color and understated decoration and form of this figure depart markedly from that familiar tradition. She has an attractive coiffure with ear ornaments, and tattooing on the legs and buttocks. But the figure is more realistic, rather than representational, which suggest it may have been used as a child's doll. Beautiful condition with no apparent restoration.
