    Northern Nguni (?) (Tanzania)
    Jointed Male and Female Figures
    Wood, nails, metal
    Male:Height(seated): 16 ¾ inches Width: 7 ½ inches Depth(with outstretched legs): 10 inches
    Female:Height(seated): 16 ¾ inches Width: 7 3/8 inches Depth(with outstretched legs): 10 inches

While a fair number of medium-sized articulated figures have appeared from east and southeast Africa over the past decades, they are extremely heterogeneous in facial and figural rendering. One is usually left with the designation used here, Northern Nguni (or Ngoni), which refers to a linguistic cluster, some of whom were Zulu who left Natal and moved northward almost a century ago. It is reported that such figures were used by some groups in funerary contexts. Dressed to resemble the deceased, they were manipulated by a son (or another appropriate speaker) during the praise recitation regarding the deceased.

The male figure's right toes are chipped, while there is loss of the front right part of the female figure's right foot. Both figures have minor surface abrasions.
