    Nayarit Polychrome Couple

    Ça 200 BC-200 AD
    Slipped ceramic with polychrome

    9¾" High x 6¼" Wide

The male figure holds a rattle in his left hand. His right arm is elongated to reach his knee. He wears a headdress of striped material, possibly leather, and his ears are ornamented with a series of four discs in each ear. His face and body are painted in black pigment. His necklace of multiple painted strands is completed by a sculpted pendant representing a cut spondylus shell. His chest is shown quite caved in and his mouth is strangely deformed.

The female, identical in size to the male, wears a simple banded headdress, but her jewelry is identical to the male's. She carries a small empty bowl on her left shoulder. Her skirt is painted in triangular patterns with white and yellow pigments. Her mouth has the same form as the male's. It is extraordinary to find a Nayarit couple so well painted and sculpted and so much alike in detail. The couple appears to be in very good condition.
