Moche Gold Votive Effigy of a Man

    C. 400-600 AD
    5½" Tall x 3¼" Wide

The offering figure is created from two heavier sheets of high karat gold with repousse and chasing techniques to create the halves and then soldered together to create a hollow, complete figure. The image shows a standing Moche man with a cap over the head, large ears, eyebrows, nose, elliptical eyes, and wide mouth. He wears a large collar composed of multiple rectangular pieces, the hands held at the chest, each arm with a bracelet, a loin cover, and feet exposed.

The figure closely resembles terra cotta molded votive statues of the same period and may have originally been started with overlaying the sheets on a pottery piece and chasing, or, using a mold and heating the gold sheet enough to conform within. The idol exhibits ancient repair spots to the nose and some weak holes to the lower right side and has suffered some indentations and distortions due to burial, and is complete.

The large effigy would have been interred within an important burial, and, more than likely, a part of a cache of other precious metal offerings.
