Maya Painted Vase and Bowl

6¾" tall and 4¼" x 5¾" Diameter

A creamy based cylinder vase painted with bright orange exhibiting two large glyphs of a long snouted deity having a large central eye, plumes, tied knot behind the head, and large toothy jaw below. Each face is separated by a vertical glyph column representing 8 Ahau. At the rim, a band of compound glyphs surrounds the cup. Vessel has surface pitting and reconstructed to one side and is complete. Such a vase would have been reserved for royalty or dignitaries. The bowl sits on a shallow pedestal with a cylindrical body, the interior painted in black and the outer wall with two seated chieftains wearing large bundled headdress with flowing plumes, loin covers in red, and between them is a large red storage jar with a bundle of three spotted staffs. Intact condition with expected surface pitting.
