    Margaret Kilgallen (1967-2001)
    Untitled, circa 2001
    9-1/4 x 6-1/4 inches (23.5 x 15.9 cm)

    The artist;
    Private collection, acquired by the present owner from the above.

    In the late 80s and early 90s, San Francisco artists began mixing street art with craft to develop a lowbrow style of art later coined "The Mission School" (after San Francisco's Mission District). Artists of the Mission School used non-traditional materials such as spray paint, whiteout, ballpoint pens, cardboard, and found objects. Influenced by comic art, graffiti, folk art, sign painting, and other forms of street art, they held exhibitions in garage galleries before crossing over into traditional galleries and museums. The most prominent members of the school include Chris Johanson, Rubi Neri, Barry McGee (aka "Twist") and his wife, Margaret Kilgallen.

    Margaret Kilgallen exhibited at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, The Drawing Center in New York, John Berggruen Gallery in San Francisco, Deitch Projects in New York, and the UCLA Hammer Museum in Los Angeles before she passed away from breast cancer at the young age of 33. Forgoing chemotherapy while she was pregnant, she died three months after the birth of her daughter. After her death in 2001, her work was chosen for the Whitney Biennial in 2002 and has since been included in a number of exhibitions worldwide.

    Kilgallen's sketchbook reflects the style and technique she is best known for: knowledge of sign painting, graphic design, American folk art, and letterpress. The used sketchbook, presumably purchased from Thrift Town, a well-known local thrift store, is filled with typography alongside folksy images of women depicted in ink, paint, and correction fluid. One page references artists such as Raymond Pettibon, Barbara Kruger, and Peter Beard. Others offer short poems, sketches of plant life, and an anonymous smoking "heroine." Like a curio cabinet begging to be explored, the random assortment of text, materials, and ideas showcases the unique style that brought this artist to prominence.
