    Description

    Lobi (Burkina Faso/ Côte d'Ivoire)
    Back-to-back Standing Figures
    Wood
Height: 23 ¾ inches Width: 4 inches Depth: 5 inches

Regularly Lobi figures come in male-female pairs, since many are for home ancestral shrines where couples fit the lineage context. Here, however, the figures are fused back-to-back. Figures joined, along with those with aberrant numbers of limbs or heads, are classified by Piet Meyer as ti bala, "extraordinary persons". "The Lobi think that these 'extraordinary figures' have not only an appearance 'out-of-the-ordinary', but that they retain more than common forces and powers. This is why they are called 'dangerous persons' (ti puo)" Piet Meyer, "Art and Religion Lobi', Arts d'Afrique Noire, 39, Automne 1981, p.22; this writer's translation).

The male figure has insect damage on both arms (more on his left), and the toe areas of both feet are missing. The female figure has insect damage on both legs near the knees, and the toe areas of both feet are partially missing.

    Provenance: Thomas D. Slater, Indianapolis
