Among different Maasai shield designs, called sirata, such rather large shields with painted designs which included red pigment were owned by proven warrior herders known as moran. Protection of the community as needed, and of the valuable cattle at all times, was the duty of moran. The red pigment was made by mixing earth in blood or the sap of soanum campylae.

There are age cracks and two separating places on the proper right edge, as well as general heavy use scars front and back.
