Kanyok or Lulua (?) (Democratic Republic of Congo)
    Squatting Figure
    Height: 8 ¾ inches Width: 2 3/8 inches Depth: 3 ¼ inches

Although the squatting posture of this figure is found in the sculpture of numbers of Central Congo groups, a variety of differing interpretations have been offered, dependent upon the originating people. Since that is uncertain in this instance, it is best simply to suggest that a reflective, possibly liminal concept is embodied. The head projection with a small opening suggests potential insertion of magical substances to introduce the properties of an amulet. (Contrantijn Petridis in Gustaaf Verswijver, Els De Palmenaer, Viviane Baeke, and Anne-Marie Bouttiaux-Ndiaye, eds. Masterpieces from Central Africa. Munich, New York: Prestel, 1996, p.168.) In addition to chips on the head receptacle, there are repatinated insect holes on the proper left upper arm and around the base.

    Provenance: Stanley Yalkowsky, New York
