Jo Lathwood was a talented sportswear designer from Santa Monica, who lived only a block from State Beach where she spent a lot of her time. Her little apartment, with its magnificent unblocked view of the ocean, also housed her custom boutique. Everyone knew Jo Lathwood for her friendly personality and excellent physique. She designed for Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Cole of California, and White Stag in addition to her private customers, many of them movie people. Some of the first bikinis seen on local California beaches were her designs. She traveled for six months each year, always to the islands, where she painted oils and water colors of the local scenery and people. Many of the fabrics she designed were inspired by the tropical foliage and colors she saw on her trips. The present work, a gift to Paul and Janet, is a beachscape she produced in Jamaica. Lathwood had been a close friend of the talented writer Christopher Isherwood, whom Paul also knew.
